This class will dissect three young adult dystopian novels: Hunger Games, Matched, and Divergent. We will spend 50 minutes discussing each book. We will explore the characters motivations, lives and experiences, values and prospects. We will discuss the dystopian world were they live and political issues that are faced in the book. Relationships between characters will be reviewed as well as development and growth within the characters. The last 5 minutes will allow time to talk about the next reading assignment and homework.
The objectives of the lesson are to identify key parts of the story, analyze the content in depth and engage in a meaningful discussion of the content while discussing ethics. This is a highly discussion-driven class so students should have finished the assigned reading before attending class. There will be some written assignments both creative and critical.
