In this fundamental drawing course, students will learn drawing skills and techniques that will lay a foundation for strong art creation. We will talk about drawing pencils and paper while experimenting with how they affect mark-making. Through observational drawing, we will learn about and practice critical seeing of object contours while also paying attention to the values that build the forms of objects and create a sense of light and space.
Each week students will work on their drawing skills through a mixture of lectures with demonstrations, guided exercises, and drawing projects. Each lesson will build on the previous for a dynamic drawing education. Projects will be broken into multiple weeks to give students the time to really work on the execution of their drawing projects and hone their drawing skills.
The class will adhere to the following schedule:
Week 1: Exploring drawing pencils and paper
Week 2: Lines and Mark-making
Week 3: Shapes
Week 4: Form
Week 5: Value
Week 6: Observational Drawing 1 - Blind Contours
Week 7: Observational Drawing 2 - Contours
Week 8: Space
Week 9: One- Point Perspective
Week 10: Still Life Drawing Pt. 1
Week 11: Still Life Drawing Pt. 2
Week 12: 1-Point Landscape Drawing Pt. 1
Week 13: 1-Point Landscape Drawing Pt. 2
Week 14: Two-Point Perspective
Week 15: 2-Point Landscape Drawing Pt. 1

Students will start a journey of drawing, but it should be noted that drawing is a skill that must be exercised and practiced regularly. To facilitate the habit of practice, students will be given a weekly prompt and are encouraged to keep a sketch journal between classes practicing their learned skills within the scope of the prompt. I will give students the opportunity to share their journal entries for the week if they choose.
